Kindness and decency

Essential ingredients in the remedy for Scotland’s recovery from the pandemic, and compass points on the path to independence.

  1. Again Jamie you are expressing my thoughts in a much more eloquent way than I could and thank you for that. I think your choice of Kindness as the underlying force for good in an Independent Scotland is spot on and clearly identifies the key difference between Westminster and Scotland.

  2. I think you are such a wonderful man. All her life, my grandmother wanted to see her country as an independent, free nation. I have carried her ideas with me wherever I have travelled and lived. I hope one day I can apply for a Scottish passport to replace my European one (soon to be defunct thanks to Brexit). I believe, like you, that Scotland will be able to reach its full potential only when it tears off the shackles of UK. Scotland is an educationally advanced country, full of traditions of great philosophy, engineering, science & medicine, economics, literature & artists. It is a naturally collectively organised, caring society with a left wing progressive values at its heart. I’ve worn the kilt, danced the Swords & passed as much as I can on to my daughters. When I hear you and your rational thought I hear echoes of my Nan. She had the lilting soft tones of a lowlander (from Dumfries) with the courage & strength of a Highlander (we had holidays in Falkirk & beyond with my Great Aunt & Uncle). I wish I could be there to vote but I live in Adelaide, South Australia. I long to return again to a free country.

  3. You look younger than when you started this series! Personal appearance aside, it’s been wonderful to follow you through these videos and I’m sure many would agree we could not wish for a more thoughtful and compassionate guide. I know you’ve had a great response, Jamie – quite right too – so I think there’s hope your words have reached out beyond the already convinced and converted.

I don’t participate in social media as such, but via emails have shared with a couple of friends I know were moving in the direction of independence I am pretty sure they’ve given people pause for thought and helped more than a few folk along the way.

Well done on all your work here. I’m looking forward to the final instalment – and hoping you’ll recommission yourself for a further series in the run-up to a referendum in the not-too-distant future.

    • You are very kind, Drew. Youthful? Hmm … must be that optimism potion available from all good Indy stores. I certainly plan to recommission myself for the next round, though with one video having become eight almost without my realising it I think I’ll take a break after next week (and I’ve almost run out of trees to gaffer tape my phone to). Thank you for your support – I appreciate it hugely.

  4. Thanks for this, another well articulated and measured explanation about Scotland’s choice at this time.
Just one thing, though not a criticism. The Scottish Greens are to be applauded on their policies about mitigating climate change, and a green recovery etc. You say that Scotland’s ambition and need to be independent, is by the by (my interpretation) if the matter of climate change etc is not a priorit? My take is that, if Scotland does not secure independence very soon, the Greens’ ambitions for a Green recovery and action on climate change, will come to nothing because, the English government will make sure that Scotland is fracked, mined, (gold mining as we speak, at Tyndrum, prospecting for rare Earths in a large part of the area north of there) and drilled to high heaven, to extract what they can, as well as building huge pipelines to remove Scotland’s publicly owned water.
Geologically not good for Scotland, as aquifers would soon be depleted. I can envisage the EngGov selling Scotland’s water!!

Every party that wants Scotland to be an environmentally sustainable, responsible country, must put independence at the core of their narrative, I fear the Greens pander to the middle class who rightly will vote for their Green credentials, but, not necessarily for an indepentent country, able to act on policy to carry out those targets. I could be wrong.
Imo, without independence, Scotland is in great peril, environmentally, economically, and societally, and in terms of security. We all know that of course, but that message needs to be taken out to voters.

Only independence can stop the English Government from using Scotland to offset their own huge CO2 emissions, due to their own incompetence and lack of investment in climate change mitigation, and their ambitions/plans to build coal mines in the north of England. Not to mention Nuclear power, which Scotland neither needs nor wants.

    • Ps, I should add that in no way is my comment meant to be anti anyone, or any demographic. Independence supporters/voters represent a broad church. I just worry that some people might be thinking that Scotland will manage to achieve climate targets to secure a sustainable future, while still part of the UK. As it has become apparent, that is not going to be possible.
Looking at all scenarios, by remaining part of the UK, by being ruled by a right wing disaster capitalist country next door, it’s the least likely option to secure a sustainable future.

      Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands, it’s crucial.

      • I couldn’t agree more! If I seemed to be saying the climate crisis trumps independence, it wasn’t what I intended – though of course from a certain perspective it trumps anything and everything else. But to be shackled to eg Westminster energy policy wd be a disaster from which only independence can deliver us. Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
